The Gondolas Are Back in Oakland
You don't have to go far for a romantic getaway with Italian flair. There's a little piece of Venice right here in the city of Oakland…and if not for an occasional jogger, you might even forget where you are. As you cruise around beautiful Lake Merritt, you might just discover the perfect place for a proposal. "We've had a few and so far and all of them have been yes, " say gondola Servizio’s owners April Quinn and her husband Angelino Sandri. Whatever the occasion, there's nothing like gliding by rowboats and geese and still feelings like you’re a million miles away.

Designed by the gifted Julia Morgan and later expanded under the creative vision of Frank Lloyd Wright protégé Aaron Green. Beautiful gardens, alcoves, stairwells, fountains and chapels rising into vaulted ceilings and illuminated by natural light await you! Space is limited for these docent-guided tours. Dia de los Muertos Festival
The Day of the Dead is celebrated in Mexico on November 1st and 2nd every year. The Mexican people believe the gates of heaven are opened at midnight on October 31st, and for 24 hours angelitos —the spirits of deceased children—are allowed to rejoin their families. The modern celebration, which is very expensive for many indigenous villagers, involves making offerings of food, flowers, and other items at an altar in honor of a loved one who has died.
